Would you like to discover what an Adult-Child Well-Being Approach Is, and why it is important?
I Matter Framework Training Supports Joined Up Thinking for Professionals and Parents.
Is there something missing when we think about challenging or complex behaviour in children? Have you been concerned for a while about a child but don't know quite what to do? Have you been looking for help and found yourself frustrated and despairing at long waits? Participation in I Matter Training, helps adults in schools homes and communities, to discover a new confidence in their own ability to bring about positive change and healthier, happier outcomes and results - one adult-child relationship at a time. We use a powerful series of posters to explain decades of well-evidenced theory and research about children's mental health and well-being. Professionals and parents consistently report the significant positive impact of the training on their own understanding and hence on their well-being and confidence at work, and at home, including the positive impact it has had on the health of work and home relationships. |
Where does I Matter fit with all the rest? Our experience of working with many practitioners and parents is that information overload is a common problem. I Matter offers a carefully organised strong clear and engaging approach on which to build insight and skills.
Studying the I Matter Framework helps professionals and parents to integrate ideas from the research evidence base in a very practical, accessible way. The integration brings new clarity for those feeling 'lost in the fog' of challenging everyday work and home relationships. The good news is that with discussion and teamwork we have seen that with deeper insight, it's never too late to make key differences and support the development of new skills that can help the challenging child. To make an impact, we start with YOU and your key role - in your community. We start with the local and think global! |
WhAt IS THE HISTORY OF THE I MATTER FRAMEWORK?
The I Matter Framework started out more than 20 years ago as a project seeking to understand how to respond to long waiting lists and the implications of a very wide body of research relevant to improving outcomes for children. The goal was to organise complex ideas about challenging behaviour and stress and children's mental health into a practical, integrated, teachable theoretical whole suitable for a wide range of starting points.
The I Matter Framework is now a high quality, very practical, CPD accredited supported online training and school-community development tool . It helps professionals work more effectively with challenging children and with parents, The common focus is on improving adult-child relationship health by developing insight, curiosity and empathy about their child and about themselves, by integrating diverse but familiar ideas and by raising expectations about the possibilities of positive change.. We are currently working in Kendal with a small number of schools and are starting to share our learning further afield
I Matter training and coaching now helps professionals and parents in schools and communities to focus on adult-child relationship health by putting stress regulation, social emotional skills development and clarity about the adult role at the centre of practices

WHAT DOES THE EVIDENCE REALLY SAY ABOUT HOW TO IMPROVE CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING?
In response to the question, 'how are we going to support this specific child, or more generally, how are we going to address the well-being of our children and young people?', the I Matter Framework clearly demonstrates that if we want to improve outcomes in education, mental health, physical health, and crime we need to shift our focus towards: i) adult-child relationship health and recognition of stress states, ii) support for the foundations of healthy social emotional development in all children and adults and iii) community and partnership working
Attention to these issues helps children become adults who are skilled and successful in relationships - caring for each other and caring for the environment. However these are not YET our priorities in our polices and practices. Instead we have schools and communities full of many very stressed children and adults in settings that are undervaluing the importance of relationship based learning and the skills involved. There are also significant social and political inequalities that contribute to stress, ill-health and conflict. So we want to support a shift towards the centrality of relationship skills and competencies.

You love children and became an education or health professional to be in the classroom or clinic doing what you love with children and their families! However, you may be finding these days that your role or this work brings you face to face with issues like:
- Why exactly are there so many struggling children?
- Where do I go to ensure children and families get the help they need?
- Where can I find the training I need, or that my team need?
- How do we choose between different approaches?
- What can I/we do ourselves in our community to make a difference?
- Could I perhaps make a contribution? What could I do?
I’m Dr Cathy Betoin, the founder of the I Matter Framework Training Company, a Kendal based social enterprise. I'm a Clinical Psychologist, an experienced primary teacher and a parent. I wrestled with all of these issues before putting this training together. As a company we now work with schools and communities to help you train your staff, respond to the missing link and transform practices.
The training presents well established psychological theory and research evidence in a carefully designed structured training process, providing an engaging way of supporting a positive attachment and ACEs and trauma sensitive change process for children families and communities. We love to share it!
